Animal activists have been campaigning for outerwear brand Canada Goose to stop using fur for many years. Now, the brand has announced it will no longer be using fur and will finally be going fur-free,
Taking a phased approach to remove fur from its coats, Canada Goose will cease purchases of fur by the end of the year.
Following that, it will no longer manufacture any products containing fur by the end of 2022.
Praising the decision, The Humane Society, said it was a “momentous step in the demise of cruel fur fashion”.
Coyote fur
Canada Goose has come under fire many times in the past for its use of wild coyote fur in its coat hoods.
Shockingly, wild coyotes are trapped, killed, and skinned all in the name of fashion to create the popular coats.
The animals are caught in traps where they can remain stuck and suffering for days before they are killed for their fur.
Claire Bass, executive director of the Humane Society, said: “For years, Canada Goose’s trademark parka jackets with coyote fur trim have been synonymous with fur cruelty but their announcement today is another major blow to the global fur trade.”
Realising that the future of fashion is fur-free, the company noted in its 2017 IPO filing that continuing to use fur could harm its sales and reputation thanks to pressure from animal activists.
‘Sustainable evolution’
Speaking about the decision to finally get with the times and leave fur to the animals, President & CEO of Canada Goose, Dani Reiss, said that the company has ditched fur as part of its comment to sustainability.
“Our focus has always been on making products that deliver exceptional quality, protection from the elements, and perform the way consumers need them to; this decision transforms how we will continue to do just that.
“We continue to expand – across geographies and climates – launching new categories and products designed with intention, purpose and functionality. At the same time, we are accelerating the sustainable evolution of our designs”, he explained.
The Toronto-based company has committed to achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2025 by creating more sustainable designs.
The company released its “most sustainable parka to date” earlier this year that uses up to 65% less water in its production compared to its current designs, as well as 30% less carbon.
Fur-free fashion
The fashion world is fast falling out of love with fur, with many companies pledging to go fur-free.
In fact, even British Vogue has called for an end to fur, dubbing it a “retrograde product mired in unjustifiable ethical issues”.
